Covert Political Contributions Grow | Endangered Species Protections Dwindle

AwN | This article highlights the effect the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling is having on endangered species protections. The argument here is that unregulated contributions enabled by the Citizens United ruling has allowed corporations and industry to overhwelm the democratic procedure and essentially buy a say in the level of environmental protections. Further, the article argues that the use of "riders" allows politicians to pass unpopular legislation regarding various endangered species.

Citizens United: The Cash Cow That's Killing Endangered Species

"A new study I co-authored called "Politics of Extinction" reveals that over the past five years, Republicans in Congress have launched 164 attacks on the Endangered Species Act or an average of 33 per year. That's a 600 percent increase in the rate of legislative attacks on endangered species since Citizens United."....

Right to Know?

AwN | I steer clear of politics for this website, as it is usually and merely divisive. But I do believe in autonomy and the right to decide what is and is not put in your body. The DARK act or Denying Americans the Right to Know what is in their food act needs to be stopped. It will be another woeful precedent of misinformation and diminishing rights for people as well as a growth in power for corporations.

Judge Fines Greenpeace $2,500 per Hour for Shell Protest

Judge Fines Greenpeace $2,500 per Hour for Shell Protest

Judge Slams Greenpeace | Frees Up More Oil

AwN | A Shell icebreaker was temporarily delayed on its way to an arctic drilling operation by a group of people hanging from a bridge and some kayaks, but has been freed to leave by the American legal system. A judge found Greenpeace to be in civil contempt and ordered their organization, Greenpeace, to pay 2,500 dollars per hour until the protest was over.

Soda Industry Sues San Fransisco Over Labels

Soda Industry Sues San Fransisco Over Labels

Soda Industry  Sues San Fransisco

AwN | Pretty much all harmful products are subject to proper labeling, and when they are not it is hotly debated. This is similar to the GMO labeling war currently going on. In this instance San Fransisco has ordered the labeling of soda products with a statement such as: "WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. This is a message from the City and County of San Francisco."

It is the belief of the soda industry that such a statement is misleading, and violates their first amendmant rights. Their contention is that the first amendment protects them from having the government's opinion supressing their right to market their product however they like. And while to me personally that rings a positive bell, the fact of the matter is that the government does this all the time. Frankly I don't know how I stand on this issue. I suspect if you are reading this webpage you have at least a slight notion that soda is very bad for you, and I agree. But I also abhor the government instructing people how to think. I hope you will think closely about this and draw your own conclusions.

Hydropower Industry Attempts to Bypass Environmental Regulations

Hydropower Industry Attempts to Bypass Environmental Regulations

Circumventing the right to clean energy and clean environment

AwN | This is a power grab for the energy industry to circumvent locals and environmental regulations for their own gain. Basically the proposed legislation will allow hydropower dam owners to ignore the need for fish passageways and only answer to however far their morals of corporate greed is willing to take them. Please read the following article and Consider Signing: Stop the Hydropower Industry From Rolling Back Our Environmental Protections

Almond Milk Without the Almonds

Almond Milk Without the Almonds

AwN | Yet again the food industry lies about what it creates. While you may feel like this is a modern problem, I do not believe this problem is temporal. The bad side of human nature will always lead certain people to do whatever they feel like they can get away with. In this instance a company named Almond Breeze seems to have mislead people as to how many almonds were contained in their almond milk, or so the lawsuit alleges.

I don't really know one way or the other, but it just highlights the fact that if you don't engage the growing process, learn to and actually produce your own food, you are likely to forever be in the dark about all you consume.

Scientists Say Outlook for Pacific Bluefin Is Worse Than Previously Thought

Scientists Say Outlook for Pacific Bluefin Is Worse Than Previously Thought

AwN | I am borderline a vegetarian, or a pescavegan or an ovolactopesca vegan, I don't really bother putting labels on it though as its not very helpful. But one of the several reasons I'm not just a full blown vegan is that I will occasionally eat tuna. Maybe once or twice a month at most, but when I think about it, it never really makes me comfortable.

Now I am the sort of person who investigates and thinks about most of the things that I do, that is what inspired me to create these webpages, to share these insights with those who have similar interests in the environment, and enable them to share back -- so I'm greatly saddened by the following article. Not only does it make me consider my contribution to the 4% of natural levels that the tuna population is at, not only do I now consider their possible extinction, but from my own selfish view I can no longer eat tuna knowing what I know. One of the few convenient "fast foods" I could have is not longer acceptable in my own mind.

New analysis lowers odds the population will reach rebuilding target...

Lake Mead Still Drying Out

Lake Mead Still Drying Out

Western Drought Still Looming

AwN | It is hard to over emphasize the importance of the drought out west. Here on this website you can see the levels of Lake Mead which are at record lows. At its full water level, Lake Mead is the largest water reservoir in the United States. Lake Mead is formed by the Hoover Dam. It hasn't been at capacity since 1983. Wikipedia

With Las Vegas drawing 90% of its water from the Colorado River via Lake Mead this issue is of enormous importance. And while Las Vegas needs this once abundant water supply, so does California as they siphon water from the Colorado River not only for thirsty people and lawns, but also their gigantic agriculture industry which feeds most of the country. Once again I am left telling peeople to stop wasting food, and start producing their own. Not only for food security but to reduce our impact on places we can't see which are suffering due to the demands of people thousands of miles away.
